About our Diabetes Prevention Program

The Division offers support to GPs, practice nurses and practice staff in all aspects of diabetes prevention through practice visits, phone support, resource provision and continuing professional development activities.

Risk factors and prevention of type 2 diabetes
The good news is that research has shown type 2 diabetes can be prevented in up to 58% of cases.
You cannot change risk factors like your:

  • age - the older you get the more likely you are to get diabetes
  • family history - type 2 diabetes is strongly in the family
  • history of gestational diabetes
  • history of cardiovscular disease.

You can change your lifestyle risk factors by:

  • achieving and maintaining a healthy weight - especially around your waist
  • being physically active
  • following a healthy balanced eating plan - eat plenty of vegetables and high fibre cereal products and use a minimum amount of fat and oils.
Your lifestyle choices can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes prevention programs are available to people aged 40 or over who have scored 15 or above on the AusDRisk test (available here).
